Reinvent the Toilet Challenge - Sanitation Innovation

Global (Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia), Multi-Regional

Launched by the Gates Foundation in 2011, the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge funds development of innovative, off-grid toilet technologies for settings without sewer infrastructure. The initiative has generated 25+ innovations including the Omni Processor (converting waste to energy/water) and pit latrines with biodegradable building blocks. Beyond technology, the program works on demand creation for improved sanitation and behavior change to drive adoption in communities transitioning from open defecation.

Behavior Goal

Drive adoption of improved sanitation technologies and end open defecation through innovative product design and demand creation

Key Takeaways

  • 1User-centric design essential for technology adoption in low-resource settings
  • 2Off-grid solutions enable sanitation in areas without sewer infrastructure
  • 3Resource recovery (energy, water, fertilizer) creates economic incentive
  • 4Technology must be affordable (under 5 cents per user per day target)
  • 5Demand creation and behavior change required alongside technology innovation
