Reinvent the Toilet Challenge - Sanitation Innovation
Global (Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia), Multi-Regional
Launched by the Gates Foundation in 2011, the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge funds development of innovative, off-grid toilet technologies for settings without sewer infrastructure. The initiative has generated 25+ innovations including the Omni Processor (converting waste to energy/water) and pit latrines with biodegradable building blocks. Beyond technology, the program works on demand creation for improved sanitation and behavior change to drive adoption in communities transitioning from open defecation.
