Uganda AI Mental Health Chatbot
A groundbreaking AI-powered mental health support system developed by Makerere University and Butabika Hospital in Uganda. The chatbot provides mental health support in local languages (Swahili and Luganda), addressing both the critical shortage of mental health professionals and the stigma around seeking help. The AI is trained on anonymized call recordings to understand how mental health conditions are described locally, enabling culturally-sensitive identification and response to depression, psychosis, and suicidality. The service is designed to be accessible via SMS for those without smartphones.
