Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (URHI)
India, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Multi-Regional
The Urban Reproductive Health Initiative was a Gates Foundation-funded program (2009-2015) to improve family planning access in urban slums of India, Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal. It combined supply-side interventions (provider training, commodity management, facility improvements) with demand creation through community health workers and educational outreach. The program significantly increased modern contraceptive uptake among the urban poor, with measurable increases in new family planning acceptors across all countries.
