CDC Safe Water System (SWS)
Global (30+ countries), Global
The Safe Water System, developed by CDC and USAID, combines locally-produced dilute chlorine bleach solution (e.g., WaterGuard), safe storage containers with narrow openings and spigots, and community health worker education to prevent water recontamination. Implemented in 30+ countries since 1998, SWS has cut diarrheal deaths in half among children under five in target populations and reduced diarrhea by two-thirds among people living with HIV/AIDS.
Behavior Goal
Consistent household water treatment with chlorine, safe storage practices to prevent recontamination, and improved water handling behaviors

Key Takeaways
- 1Simple, affordable technology (chlorine + safe storage) can dramatically reduce diarrhea
- 2Community health workers are effective channels for product distribution and education
- 3Bundling with other health services (ANC, HIV care) increases reach
- 4Local production of chlorine solution improves sustainability and affordability
